Early years and the discovery of the saxophone (1956–1973)

Kenny G was on June 5, 1956 born as Kenneth Bruce Gorelick in Seattle, Washington. His love for the saxophone began at the age of ten, when he saw a saxophonist perform in The Ed Sullivan Show on television. That one moment was enough — he was hooked. His first saxophone was a Buffet Crampon alto, and he learned to play under the guidance of local trumpeter Gerald Pfister, but practiced mostly by playing along with his favorite records.

In high school, Kenny already played in the school jazz band and took private lessons. His musical instinct was so strong that he... seventeen years of age already professionally hired — by none other than Barry White, to perform with his Love Unlimited Orchestra at the Paramount Northwest Theatre in his hometown of Seattle. It was the birth of the stage name Kenny G.

Study, funk and the road to solo

While he spread his musical wings, Kenny G enrolled at the University of Washington to study accounting — a striking choice for a young musician with such pronounced talent. But music beckoned more strongly. Alongside his studies, he played with the Seattle funk band Cold, Bold & Together and later with the jazz-fusion group The Jeff Lorber Fusion, with which he toured and made recordings.

In 1982, he signed a contract with Arista Records and released his self-titled debut album out. The breakthrough took a little longer to materialize, but the foundation had been laid for one of the most remarkable careers in instrumental music.

International breakthrough: Duotones and Songbird

The real breakthrough came in 1986 with his fourth studio album. Duotones. The album contained the single ‘Songbird’ — a song that Kenny G himself wrote as potential film music, but which he ultimately placed on the album himself. With its smooth, soaring melody on soprano saxophone, 'Songbird' conquered the charts and grew into his signature: the sound the world would associate with his name.

The albums Silhouette (1988) and Kenny G Live (1989) built further on this success. 'Going Home', recorded during his first live concert, became a worldwide phenomenon — and in China has even grown into the unofficial closing song of shopping centers, markets and train stations.

Record-breaking years: Breathless and the Grammy

In 1992, Kenny G reached the peak of his commercial career with the album. Breathless. It sold more than in the United States alone 12 million copies and it became best-selling instrumental album in history. Worldwide, the count grew to more than 30 million copies — a record that stands to this day.

The single ‘Forever in Love’ from this same album won in 1994 the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. The song, written and produced by Kenny G himself, showcases his gift for evoking a sense of timeless romance with a simple melody line.

In 1997, Kenny G established a Guinness World Record: with the technique of circular breathing he held a single note (an E-flat) no less than 45 minutes and 47 seconds full during a performance in New York. A performance that blurs the line between music and athletics.

A versatile career and lasting relevance.

After Breathless, Kenny G continued releasing albums that invariably landed at the top of the Billboard Jazz charts: the Christmas album Miracles (1994), The Moment (1996), the jazz standards album Classics in the Key of G (1999) and later Brazilian Nights (2015) and New Standards (2021). He collaborated with greats such as Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Peabo Bryson, Babyface — and surprisingly enough, also with Kanye West and The Weeknd, which drew a whole new generation of fans to his music.

With over 75 million albums sold worldwide Kenny G is not only the best-selling instrumentalist of all time, but also one of the best-selling artists in music history. He still tours actively and plays hundreds of concerts annually to sold-out venues.

The distinctive sound: soprano saxophone and smooth jazz

Kenny G plays mainly soprano saxophone, but also regularly reaches for alto and tenor. His sound is characterized by a silky-smooth tone, long melodic lines and a warm, almost vocal timbre. His style falls outside traditional jazz — he improvises little and sticks to recognizable melodies — but precisely because of this, his music is immediately accessible and emotionally moving to millions of people worldwide.

‘'Songbird' (1986) is his most iconic song and his artistic signature. ‘'Going Home' (1989) grew into a global cultural phenomenon. ‘'Forever in Love' (1992) won the Grammy and remains one of his most listened-to compositions. ‘'The Moment' (1996) and ‘Sentimental’ complete the list of his timeless classics.
